Age of Rust and the Battle for Web3 Gaming

Age of Rust began as a passion project by a single developer, quickly evolving into one of the most highly anticipated blockchain games in the space.

In 2016, it started as a dark noir text adventure game set in a sci-fi dystopian universe.

This turn-based role-playing game allowed players to embark on an adventure alone or with friends, drawing inspiration from famous treasure hunt stories such as "Ready Player One" and "Fenn's Treasure."

In January 2018, the beta version of the text adventure game, referred to as "SpacePirate Text Adventure," was released, containing a 4 BTC prize and further expanding the Age of Rust story.

Transition to a 3D Experience and Partnership with Enjin

In April 2018, the developers of Age of Rust decided to elevate the gaming experience by moving the game to a 3D version while preserving the rich narrative from the Alpha and Beta releases.

Around the same time, they chose to shift the in-game assets from the Counterparty Protocol to the Ethereum blockchain, leveraging Enjin's superior technology, including the Enjin Wallet, ERC-1155 tokens, multiverse items, and token backing.

NFT Treasures and Crypto Bounties

Aside from its engaging gameplay and captivating narrative, Age of Rust gained recognition for integrating Enjin Coin (ENJ) and Bitcoin (BTC)-based game rewards. While the game is free-to-play, certain high-level puzzles may require tokens for completion.

The beta launch on Steam featured an in-game bounty hunt with over $1 million in Bitcoin and Enjin tokens, attracting a wave of players eager to test their puzzle-solving skills. The ultimate prize of 20 BTC awaits those who persevere until the end of the game's third season, with 4 BTC and ENJ tokens up for grabs along the way.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are utilized in exciting ways, from bestowing special abilities to unlocking secret areas.

In your search for answers, you'll explore, examine, experiment—and unlock extra content to experience.

Three types of puzzles will test your skills and intellect in the dystopian world of Age of Rust:

  • Adventure progress: furthering the story (e.g., find a hidden lever to open a door)
  • Crypto puzzles: require certain blockchain-based inventory and can issue crypto rewards. 4 BTC and 35,000+ ENJ / NFT bounties to be found
  • Crypto treasure hunt: the grand goal hidden behind clues spread across the game, combining for the treasure trove of a 20 Bitcoin (BTC) reward

Age of Rust will launch with 3 seasons, offering a total of 100 hours of story-driven gameplay. The 20 BTC grand prize will be discovered in the 3rd season, with another 4 BTC and 35,000+ other bounties and NFT treasures to be found along the way.

Engaging puzzles with incredible rewards is just the icing on the sci-fi cake, though. Age of Rust offers an exciting gaming experience that easily stands on its own without the allure of rewards.

Pioneering the First Gaming Multiverse

In August 2018, Age of Rust partnered with Enjin and five other games to create the world's first gaming multiverse, connecting their in-game worlds through blockchain technology and ERC-1155 assets.

This historic collaboration laid the groundwork for unprecedented interconnectedness within the gaming industry.

Battling Steam and Allying with Epic Games

Despite its early success, Age of Rust encountered a significant obstacle when Steam announced a ban on all Web3 games from its platform in November 2021, citing concerns over game items with real-world value.

In response, the game's developers sought new avenues for growth, ultimately finding support from Epic Games, which embraced blockchain technology and NFTs on its platform.

In March 2024, the Epic Games Store added 20 new NFT and blockchain games, including Age of Rust, fostering a supportive environment for the continued development of the blockchain gaming sector.

I met up with them at the Game Developers Conference in 2018. The next day I went to see the Enjin booth and they had this game called Enjin Quest running, it was a real game demo and right next to it was a phone with a wallet. When the little adventurer grabbed a jewel, it showed up on the mobile phone. I knew right then and there that I had just seen what the future of blockchain gaming was going to be.
